Description

All four have autographed this off-white colored piece of paper measuring 3″ x 3 3/4″ beautifully in blue ballpoint pen, with Ringo Starr writing “Love from the Beatles” at the top of the page – which is always a great sentiment to have written on a Beatles autograph set. Additionally, he has added “XXX” after signing in the rare configuration for him of first name over last. John Lennon has added “X” after his signature and his pen has skipped slightly while signing his first name and he recovered the “hn”. The page has a non-detracting horizontal fold. The autographs were obtained on February 8, 1963, at the Crown & Mitre Hotel in Carlisle, England, after the band performed live in concert at the ABC Cinema there in Carlisle. It is interesting to note that the band, as well as others on the bill were banned from the Carlisle Golf Club dance that night because Ringo was wearing a leather jacket. At this particular point in time, believe it or not The Beatles were an opening act for headliner and “16 year old singing sensation” Helen Shapiro and this was not even their last non-headlining tour. Their first album, “Please Please Me” was recorded in a single day on January 11th and would not be released until March 22nd, so this set of autographs dates from between the record of and release date of the album.

The autograph set comes with a letter from the original recipient who personally got the signatures at the Crown & Mitre Hotel (she got 3 sets in total), recounting the events of the evening and details of the signing for the girl friend she got this autograph set for. Here is a fairly early Beatles autograph set that was obtained when the band was at the very beginning of their meteoric rise to unprecedented Worldwide fame. It didn’t take long, as a year to the day later, they were on the eve of the Ed Sullivan Show, which would catapult them higher into the stratosphere than any other band before or since. Here is nice a lower priced autograph set obtained just before the upward trajectory for The Beatles pointed skyward.
